What is Inflammation

Whether you suffer from acute or chronic inflammation, there are no two ways about it – it can be absolutely awful. The problem with inflammation is that it’s your own body’s immune system reacting to what it deems am “invasive influence”. The body recognizes a bacterial infection and cells release compounds to swell the area and isolate the infection while also releasing reparative mediators to stop it.

This is obviously a necessary response by the body for many situations. The problem is, sometimes the body doesn’t know when to quit and the inflammation can actually be worse than the problem that caused it. The immune system is simply overactive and flares sections of the intestinal tract constantly even when no infection exists.

The meds… Oh God the meds! Anyone who has suffered from chronic inflammation has the same reaction. There are so many medications on the market these days to treat inflammatory conditions, but there are so many problems with them too.


Corticosteroids can be very effective in relieving inflammation. They work by temporarily shutting down the immune system, causing the natural inflammation to be reduced or stop. The issue with corticosteroids is they have a seemingly endless list of side effects. They include everything from skin breakouts, osteoporosis, kidney failure, muscle deterioration and on and on. These are usually used in cycles to prevent long-term constant use, but even in this case they can be damaging.


Biologics are a newer treatments for chronic inflammation that work to block receptors in the body cause cells to inflame. These can be very effective for some patients, however, many of them work for only 50-60% of the people who try them. Some side effects of these can very dangerous as well, including fatal brain disease. Before going on a biologic, do extensive research to make sure you are comfortable with it.


NSAIDs or Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, are your standard pain-killers like acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, etc. Sometimes these can be effective in managing the pain of inflammation, but they do nothing to actually cure it, they only mask the pain. Also, if they are taken too frequently they can cause severe issues with the kidney and heart.

So where does that leave us in terms of getting more help for inflammation. Turns out, millions of people take anti-inflammatory supplements to help aid in reducing symptoms and activity.

There’s a lot of hullabaloo out there when it comes to the supplement community/business. Unfortunately, many companies have no qualms about pushing sub-par product down consumers’ throats (literally). Products that sell people on miracle results that offer nothing special at all.
